1830 Pigots Commercial Directory

Thornbury is governed by a mayor, 12 aldermen, a serjeant at mace and two constables, but the power of these offices is much limited by misuse.  The Hon. Henry Howard is lord of the manor of Thornbury and holds an annual court leet there; a court for the borough and one for the hundred, for the recovery of debts under 40s are held every 3 weeks; and a court of record for the honour of Gloucester which takes cognizance of pleas to any amount once within the same period.  Mr Howard is lord of the honour and William Rolph Esq is steward of the courts.

A clothing business formerly flourished here, but has long been lost and the town has now little trade.

There are three other places of worship in the parish, apart from the church, situated in chapelries belonging to Thornbury, and in the town are meeting houses for the use of the baptists, independents, methodists and quakers.  The charities are, an alms-house, founded by Sir Jno. Stafford; a free grammar school, and a free school for teaching poor children.

The market day is Saturday; and the annual fairs are Easter Monday, August 15th and the Monday before 21st September.

The parish of Thornbury is 20 miles in circumference and including the chapelries of Falfield and Moorton, Oldbury upon Severn and Rangeworthy, and the tything of Kington contained, by the last parliamentary returns, 3760 inhabitants.
