Thornbury is a parish, market and union town and a terminus of a branch from Yate of the Midland Railway.
Population. In 1881 the population of Thornbury parish was 4164 including 126 officers and inmates of the Workhouse.
Thornbury Union comprised Thornbury itself and 20 other parishes. The population of the Union in 1881 was 17,095. Board of Guardians met every Friday at the Union Workhouse. The workhouse is a building of stone built in 1840 to hold 300 inmates. Rev Henry Bernard Hodgson M.A. chaplain, Edward Mills Grace L.R.C.P. (Edin) medical officer, Edwin Hatherall Collins, master, Mrs E Collins, matron, and Eliza A. Roberts, schoolmistress.
County Court His Honour Brynmor Jones LL.B, judge; Henry Hume Lloyd registrar and high bailiff, George Henry Exell, bailiff. The Court is held at the Petty Sessional Court house (days fixed by the judge) eight courts during the year.
County Court Police Station built 1860, High St. Robert Clarke, Sergeant and constables.
Petty Sessions are held at the Petty Sessional Court house on alternate Wednesdays at 11am.
The Corporation consisting of a Mayor and 12 Aldermen, but with no municipal authority has become extinct under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act 1883.
The town is lighted by gas by a company whose works are in Moreton and is supplied with water from works at Grovesend.
Churches. Apart from St Marys Church, there is a Baptist chapel in St John St erected 1828, a Congregational Chapel in Chapel St erected in 1826 and a Wesleyan chapel in High St built in 1878.
The Almshouses, founded in the sixteenth century by Sir John Stafford in the Back St are for six aged women. In addition there are two almshouses in the Back St.
Schools. There was formerly a “Free School” This charity is now amalgamated with the endowments of Jones Edwards and White and the whole annual income is applied to the maintenance of the Grammar School. National School (mixed) built in 1862. British School (mixed) built in 1862. National School (infants) Buckover built in 1876. British School (infants) built in 1794.
Markets etc. There is a market for the sale of cattle, sheep, pigs and cheese held on every second Wednesday, in each month. Also a mop or hiring fair held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday before March 25th. The Horticultural Society of Thornbury and District holds a show annually when prizes are given, September 29th.
In 1888 Handel Cossham presented to the town the Hall called Cossham Hall which is used for concerts and lectures and will accommodate about 500 persons built in 1789, enlarged 1835.
Post Office – Henry Robbins, postmaster. Letters from all parts arrive at 7am and 3.15pm, and are despatched at 10am, 4.30pm, 6pm and 6.50pm. Parcels excluded from the last mail.
