1895 Brown’s Directory

Petty Sessions – held at the Petty Sessional Court House daily at 10am for the purpose of hearings of indictable offences and dealing with them summarily, and of the Poaching Prevention Act.  Special Sessions also took place and those for the previous year were listed, taking place about twice a month.

County Court – held at the Petty Sessional Court House eight times a year.

General Quarter Sessions  – take place in January, April, July and October.

Post Office – Henry Robbins postmaster. Letters are despatched at 10.10am for Bristol, 4.30pm for Bristol, 6pm for Gloucester and the North and 6.50pm for Bristol & South & West Mail.  Sundays 6pm only.  Parcels are delivered at 7am and 3.15pm  week days only.

Telegraph – transacted between 8am and 8pm.  Sundays 8am to 10.10am.

Carriers – Henry Baylis to White Horse, Barrs St, Bristol, daily.

and William Underhill to the Full Moon, North St, Bristol, daily

Churches – as well as St Mary’s parish church there are Wesley Chapel, Independent Chapel and Baptist Chapel.

Schools – Thornbury Grammar School, National School, Buckover Infant School, British School. Sunday Schools in connection with each school.

Thornbury Bank 10am to 2pm; Market Days 10am to 3pm
