In 1895 the old burial ground attached to Thornbury Baptist Church was extended to provide space for 50 extra graves. Click here to see the details of people buried in the Old Burial Ground
We are grateful to the Baptist Church in Thornbury for allowing us to look at the records held in their safe. Amongst these we were fortunate to find a plan in the burial register showing the rough location of each grave in the extension to the burial ground. The plan (shown in the image on the left) gives each grave in the extension a reference number.
The register provides the names of people buried in each of these graves, the area where they lived, the date when they were buried, their age at death and the name of the Minister performing the service. There is a question about the accuracy of the list as a note made in the margin of the register that the remains of the people listed against grave 24 may not be there and the graves 25 to 28 were never dug.
We know from other sources ( Burials in the Church Minutes and Burial Certificates ) that other people were buried in that part of the churchyard but we don’t know which grave they were buried in.
Note that this part of the graveyard was severely affected by the re-development of the church in 1988. Graves had to be exhumed and the gravestones which remained were re-located around the wall of the Old Burial Ground. These gravestones represent only a small proportion of the original graves and of the stones that remain some are completely illegible. We have transcribed the stones that we were able to read. See those inscriptions.
